The annual event put on by Macy’s was pretaped last year because of Covid-19 restrictions.

The Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks show is coming roaring back this year.

The annual show will be a live event and New Yorkers will be able to gather at spots along New York City’s East River waterfront to watch, according to city officials.

Last year’s show was pretaped at undisclosed locations around the city to avoid crowds because of Covid-19 restrictions. Officials said crowds can return this year because the city’s Covid-19 positivity rate is at its lowest level since the start of the pandemic and more than 8 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccination have been administered in the city.

“New Yorkers are going to celebrate the Fourth of July in the only way that’s fit for the summer of New York City: the biggest fireworks show in America,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said. “I can’t wait to celebrate, standing in awe of the patriotic pyrotechnics.”

The show’s performers will include Coldplay and Reba McEntire, according to Mr. de Blasio.

Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer, a Democrat who represents the Queens waterfront community of Long Island City, said he was thrilled the neighborhood would again have a front-row seat to the fireworks.

“Our city has been through hell, and it’s more than OK for our people to come together and celebrate safely,” he said.

Public viewing locations will be set up for verified vaccinated spectators on elevated portions of the FDR Drive in Manhattan, with entrances at East 23rd, East 34th and East 42nd streets, according to the city.

Public viewing areas for unvaccinated people will be set up along the East River in parts of Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan.

The public-viewing plan could be changed as health and safety regulations evolve, officials said.

“Live from New York City, we will launch an epic celebration that will inspire a renewed sense of hope and optimism among our fellow New Yorkers and viewers nationwide,” said Will Coss, executive producer of Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks.
