Fox News host Dana Perino asserts that the president’s speech was not a’meet-the-moment’ on The Five’
The murderrate rose in 2020 more than in any American history. Americans are becoming more aware of the fact that 2021 will be even bloodier than 2020. Violent crime now ranks ahead of COVID-19, the economy, political correctness, and race relations as the number one issue Americans are most concerned about.
The White House saw that a poll had shown it, and on Wednesday afternoon President Biden finally reopened his mouth about skyrocketing levels of violent crime.
Biden opened his speech by saying that violent crime was related to COVID-19. Biden noted that crime has increased since the outbreak of the pandemic more than a year ago. Next, he gave a list of the things “we know” work to reduce violent crimes: Background checks and a ban against assault weapons and high-capacity magazines topped his list.
President Biden refuses to accurately describe the causes of the country’s homicide surge. Because of this, he does not have a viable plan to fight violent crime.
The problem isn’t with guns. While handguns account for the majority of gun-related murders, assault weapons make up a small percentage. Even if we crack down on legal gun dealers, it will not make any difference because 75% illegally obtain firearms.
COVID-19 also isn’t to be blamed. While lockdowns can lead to self-destructive, harmful behavior, they don’t increase murder. Germany, South Korea and Britain all locked down with no record rises in their murder rates. America is an outlier and that demands an explanation.
The overwhelming evidence points to the connection between the increase in murders and the violent riots of last summer as well as the Defund the Police movement. Both of which were supported, financially and rhetorically, by the Democratic Party and the Biden administration.
Instead of telling the truth, President Biden followed the golden rule of partisan politics: Never accept responsibility.
The timeline supports antipolice sentiments, rioting and COVID as root causes. While the CDC recommended that limited gatherings be allowed in March 2020 for the first time, the murder rate didn’t begin increasing until June 2020 after violent riots swept the country.
In America’s major cities, the average murder rate increased by 30% between 2015 and 2020. Some cities saw dramatic increases, however. Portland, which is plagued by leftist protesters and antipolice politicians, tops that list with a stunning 533% increase on murders.
A lot of academic evidence and common sense agree that there is less crime and fewer murders when there are more police officers. Biden used to understand that. In , a 2002 oped Senator Biden stated: “More cops obviously means less crime.”
The reason for the increase in crime is due to a national shortage of police officers. The Democrats’ dehumanization law enforcement has led to police resignations rising by 45% and 26% respectively.
Left-coast Seattle saw an increase of 362 percent in police retirements. Officers are leaving because the Left has made it clear that they don’t value their vital, honorable work.
The number of police officers has also dropped drastically. Unfortunately, this means that police shortages will not be solved by the White House plan. This plan allows local governments COVID funds to hire officers.
The saddest thing about Democrats’ growing responsibility for violent crime is the inability of the White House work to reduce violence. They would have a ton of responsibility to anything they held less than one-year ago.
